WELLSBORO, Tioga County – A Shenandoah-based marching band traveled to the northern tier of Pennsylvania to participate in a parade for thousands of spectators Saturday afternoon.

The Upper Schuylkill Marching Band performed in the PA State Laurel Festival Parade in Wellsboro, Tioga County, where they joined a wide variety of marching units from across Pennsylvania and New York in the parade bookending the week-long festival.

The band has performed in the parade for the past nine years, and has grown to become a crowd favorite.

On Nichols Street, a crowd of at least 30 spectators gathered, as they have since the 1970s, to watch the parade, the homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, said. The crowd displayed signs referring to themselves as the Nichols Street Judges and held signs designed for each band.

The homeowner said it’s a tradition, saying they get a list of participating bands in advance of the parade, design the signs, and keep them year-to-year. When Upper Schuylkill marched by, Jasmine Iseri, 17, Westboro, held a sign reading “Super Schuylkill.”

The parade is one of two major parades the marching band performs in each year, the other being a parade in New York City in early June. Soon, the band will perform in Shenandoah for the Divine Mercy Procession and a concert downtown, and a pair of concerts in Mahanoy City.

The band is always seeking events to perform at and new members. To book the band, email Edward Hayes at [email protected], or to become a member, email band director Kimberly Brown at [email protected].
