SHENANDOAH – In what potentially rivals the fastest response in the department’s history, all Shenandoah Fire units were on scene of a kitchen fire within about a minute, and, just as quickly, they had the fire under control.

Shenandoah’s five fire companies were participating in the annual Shenandoah Christmas Parade, just reaching Gilbert and Centre Streets, when the fire whistles blew and the tones dropped for a reported house fire at 110 West Coal Street.

Fire apparatus and a police car turned onto side streets as the Shenandoah Valley Marching Band made way for the apparatus.

The fire was brought under control within a few minutes.

According to Shenandoah Fire officials, the fire was a cooking incident, damaging the kitchen of the home and creating a smoke condition throughout. Firefighters brought a charred section of insulation outside, which officials said was a part of the home’s drop ceiling.

Firefighters remained on scene for about half an hour before clearing.

Every piece of active apparatus in the borough except the brush unit, plus the Phoenix Fire Co.’s reserve engine, were all on scene within about a minute. Mahanoy City West End’s Rescue was originally dispatched by subsequently cancelled.
