Busy start to New Year’s Eve for Shenandoah firefighters

SHENANDOAH – Two calls in three-and-a-half hours kept Shenandoah firefighters busy and out in single digit temperatures in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.
The first call came in just after 1:00am Sunday, for an odor investigation at 126 North Chestnut Street, where a resident reported an odor of gas in their first floor, despite having electric heat, and noted they heard a sound similar to running water in a vacant adjoining home.
Shenandoah’s fire chief, Telesqurt 745, and a truck from the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah handled that incident and were clear of the scene by 2:00am.
Two blocks east and two-and-a-half hours later, crews were dispatched to 132 North Jardin Street for an electrical fire just after 4:30am, as temperatures barely hovered above zero degrees.
Residents reported lights flickering and a smell of wires burning, while crews from four of Shenandoah’s five fire companies investigated.
Crews found fire in the second floor ceiling of the residence, which was quickly extinguished.
Firefighters remained on scene for just over an hour, clearing at 5:38am.
Responding were crews from the Columbia, Phoenix, Defender, and Rescue, Hook, & Ladder fire companies, as well as a crew from Shenandoah Ambulance. Mahanoy City West End’s Rescue 993 was held in station as well.
