SHENANDOAH – A Shenandoah business closed about an hour earlier than normal Saturday after an electrical problem prompted the response of borough firefighters.

Shenandoah fire marshals were called to the Dollar Tree in the Gold Star Plaza around 7:18pm for reports of a strong odor of wires burning. Employees reported an odor which became overpowering throughout the day, prompting them to call the fire department.

When they arrived on scene and began investigating, an engine was requested for its thermal imaging camera.

Shenandoah’s Columbia Fire Co. Engine 64-10 responded to the plaza and its crew investigated as well, checking the ceiling and lights.

According to fire officials, the cause of the odor was a light ballast, and the store closed until maintenance at the plaza can fix the issue.

Firefighters cleared the scene just before 8:00pm, and store employees posted a sign on the door reading, “Due to an emergency situation, Dollar Tree has closed early. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
