Fire destroys abandoned Mahanoy Plane home; firefighter injured

MAHANOY PLANE – Fire crews from across northern Schuylkill County battled a fire in an abandoned home on Island Street in the Mahanoy Plane section of Gilberton this evening.

According to Gilberton fire marshal Barry Brassington, firefighters were dispatched at 6:51 for an abandoned home on fire at 116 Island Street in Mahanoy Plane, behind Mahanoy Plane Park.

Crews arrived to find the structure aflame, and a tanker task force was dispatched, as crews contended not only with the fire but with a tight space in the no-outlet neighborhood bounded by the Mahanoy Creek and Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern Railroad.

The fire was brought under control just before 8:30pm according to fire communications.

According to Brassington, one firefighter was injured, and the fire is currently under investigation.

Assisting firefighters from Gilberton’s Continental and Mahanoy Plane Fire Companies were firefighters from Shenandoah, Girardville, Mahanoy City, Fountain Springs, Frackville, Englewood, Fountain Springs, among others.

​Also assisting was Frackville police.
