Firefighters tackle small fire in Morea

MOREA – A furnace backfire ignited a small fire in the basement of a double block home in Mahanoy Township Thursday evening into Friday.

Fire crews were dispatched to 148 Roosevelt Drive in Morea just before 11:30pm for reports of a fire, with both sides of the double block home filling up with smoke.

Firefighters from Mahanoy City, Frackville, Altamont, and Ryan Township responded to the scene, where fire crews found a small fire in the basement.

A Mahanoy City Fire chief cited the cause as furnace backfire, and the fire was promptly extinguished.

Crews remained on scene for about an hour ventilating the home and packing up equipment.

​The last Mahanoy City fire units were clear of the scene just before 12:30am.
