Hamburg man struck, killed in Tilden Township; Frackville man involved

TILDEN TOWNSHIP, Berks County – A Frackville man struck and killed a Hamburg man in a vehicle accident near Cabela’s in Tilden Township Friday morning.

According to State Police at Hamburg, the incident occurred around 6:30am Friday, when Francis Mack, 53, of Frackville, was travelling northbound on PA Route 61 in a 2005 Toyota as 31-year-old Mark Schaner, of Hamburg, was crossing the highway at Jetson Drive.

Schaner crossed the northbound lanes heading toward the west side of the roadway, though he doubled back as he made it to the median. Schaner re-entered the northbound lanes, stepping into the path of and was struck by Mack’s vehicle.

Schaner was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest in Allentown, where he was pronounced dead.  Next-of-kin were notified, and details of the crash were corroborated by an on-scene witness.

State Police at Hamburg are continuing their investigation.
