PINE GROVE – A Haven man is in Schuylkill County Prison after he led troopers on a pursuit through the Pine Grove area yesterday afternoon.

According to the state police, around 2:20pm, a trooper attempted to stop a 1998 Lexus on Tremont Road in Pine Grove Township, which had an expired registration plate assigned to another vehicle. Troopers activated their emergency lights, and the Lexus, driven by Michael Keefer, 57, of Schuylkill Haven, fled.

Troopers pursued Keefer through the backroads of the Pine Grove area, reporting speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour on Sweet Arrow Lake Road. Keefer continued to flee via Watefall Road, Pleasant Valley Road, Frantz Road, Flat Hill Road, and Wild Cherry Road.

Keefer lost control of the car on Wild Cherry Road, struck a tree, and was taken into custody.

There, he told troopers he fled because he had an active bench warrant for aggravated assault. Troopers also found he was in possession of methamphetamine, and had used methamphetamine before driving.

Keefer was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill – East Norwegian Street in Pottsville for evaluation, and was subsequently taken to county prison for the warrant.

Keefer is facing felony charges of flight to avoid apprehension, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and a variety of summary traffic violations. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David J. Rossi, Tremont, and committed to county prison on $50,000 bail.
