MAHANOY TOWNSHIP – A Hegins family of three was taken to the hospital in Coaldale after a rollover crash on Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township yesterday.

According to State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred in the area of mile marker 129.8 North around 3:00pm when a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee was travelling north and exited the roadway on the left.

The SUV, driven by Kiersten Tokar, 28, of Hegins, then crossed over the center grass median, crossed the southbound lanes of the highway, and struck the guiderail of the right shoulder of the southbound lanes.

The vehicle then rolled down a steep embankment into a wooded area, coming to a rest on its roof.

Tokar, and a pair of children, a three year old and a one year old, all were able to get out of the vehicle themselves and suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

The three were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Coaldale by Ryan Township EMS.

Assisting at the scene were Ryan Township Fire and EMS and Mahanoy City West End Rescue.
