MAHANOY CITY – It was a special night for a few Mahanoy Area students, with the honor of participating in homecoming. A particular honor was reserved for three, voted into the homecoming court, and, of course, homecoming queen.

At halftime, following a performance from the Mahanoy Area High School Band and Alumni Band, the homecoming candidates and their escorts made their way down the track, down an aisle created by MA color guard members, before lining up before the crowd.

The announcer then revealed the two homecoming court members, Cierra Abrachinsky and Madison Cavenas.

“Ladies and gentlemen, our 2018 homecoming queen — Ms. Meredith Rhoades,” said the announcer before an eruption of applause.

Rhoades, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Rhoades of Mahanoy City, is involved in various school and extracurricular activities, including the Coal Cracker Kids youth newspaper based in the borough.

Rhoades, Cavenas, and Abrachinsky were a part of a group of ten candidates.

Crowned homecoming king was Marcus Crespo.

Prior to the game and ceremony, candidates, joined by the Mahanoy Area High School band, and cheerleaders, Mahanoy Area youth football and cheerleaders, and fire apparatus from the borough and Ryan Township, paraded through the borough.

The parade began at the school, made it’s way along Centre Street to the East End, and then along Mahanoy Avenue back to the school.

Candidates and members of the youth football organization tossed candy to spectators as they made their way in Mustangs, Jeeps, and pickup trucks, among other vehicles.
