MAHANOY CITY – To notch their second victory of the season, on live TV, the Golden Bears had to outlast a late game charge by Nativity, and that they did.

The Mahanoy Area squad, entering the game 1-2, took on the Nativity Green Wave, also 1-2, surrounded by the cameras of Hazleton TV station WYLN-35, and by halftime, the game looked like a runaway in the Bears’ favor.

Mahanoy’s early scoring run began with a short run by #13 Ben Terry, a junior, followed shortly by another run by senior #11 Danny Lawrence, giving the Golden Bears a 14-0 advantage after one quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, senior #5 Haydn Wall found paydirt for a score, giving Mahanoy a 20-0 lead.

Nativity would answer, though, with about a minute left in the half, as sophomore #5 Cody Miller rushed for a touchdown, putting the Green Wave on the board. A score in the third quarter would give Mahanoy a 26-6 lead, and another with about 7:43 remaining in the game a 34-6 lead.

With about three minutes remaining, sophomore #2 Jacob Hoffman ran in a score and Miller connected with sophomore #12 Keegan Brennan for another, bringing the score to 34-19.

Sophomore #7 Steven Spolski scored for the final time in the game with about 29 seconds remaining, solidifying the 34-27 final score.

Mahanoy Area improves to 2-2 on the season, while Nativity falls to 1-3. Next week, Mahanoy travels to Berks County to take on Hamburg, while Nativity stays home to face Shenandoah Valley.
