MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County – Fire crews in Mount Carmel handled a small porch fire in the borough this afternoon, caused by embers from a cigarette.

The Mount Carmel Fire Department was dispatched to 121 South Vine Street around 3:00pm for the reported porch fire.

Emergency services arrived and found the fire was out, and out-of-town units were cancelled.

“One of the neighbors was smoking a cigarette, and some of the ashes fell down on the dried-up lumber and had it smoldering,” said Mount Carmel chief James Reed. “There were no flames or anything like that.”

Fire crews remained on scene for about 40 minutes, until around 3:40pm.
