SHENANDOAH – Over 180 runners traversed the hills of northern Schuylkill County for the 39th annual Coal Cracker 10k.

Event organizers said this year’s field was the largest in the event’s history.

This year, the race began at West Centre and Jardin Streets, instead of North Main and Lloyd as in year’s past. The rest of the course remained the same, taking runners from downtown Shenandoah through Gilberton, St. Nicholas, and back into Shenandoah to the finish line at East Centre and Market.

This year, the race was organized by the Healthy Shenandoah group, and registration was held at the Polish American Fire Company. Vendors were present on North West Street, including Kowalonek’s, Vernalis’s, the Shenandoah Jr. Blue Devils, and the SV Class of 2020.

A Fun Run for children, sponsored by Chill Out, was held at 9:00am. Kids ran from the start line at Centre and Jardin, down South Main to Herald Road, along Herald Road to Centre Street, and up East Centre to the finish line.

An hour later, the Coal Cracker 10k began, and the first runners returned in just under 40 minutes.

Full results and award winners will be posted soon, along with a full photo gallery.
