GINTHERS - A Carbon County man is dead and a Hazleton man is injured after a crash in Rush Township Friday afternoon.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to a crash at the bottom of the Mile Hill, Route 309, near Ginthers around 3:30pm.
According to Rush Township Police, a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle was travelling southbound and crossed over a median and into the northbound lanes when the vehicle apparently suffered a mechanical failure.
The Beetle, driven by Larry Wanamaker, of Palmerton, Carbon County, then struck a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by David Green, of Hazleton, Luzerne County. Green was treated at the scene and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton.
Wanamaker was unresponsive when Rush Township Police arrived, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, police said. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton, where he was pronounced dead.
"The Rush Township Police Department wishes to extend our heartfelt condolence to Mr. Wanamaker’s family," said Chief Ken Zipovsky, Rush Township Police.
The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for a little over two hours during the investigation. Rush Township Police were assisted at the scene by Ryan Township Police, DCNR Park Rangers from Tuscarora, Hometown and McAdoo firefighters, and Tamaqua and McAdoo EMS.
