SHENANDOAH – Severe thunderstorms rumbled through our area and much of the commonwealth yesterday afternoon, spawning tornado warnings in the west end of our county, much of Northumberland County, among other locations.

For most of the day, storms clipped our area, though one around 6:00pm passed through our area directly, triggering a severe thunderstorm warning and dumping up to quarter sized hail on Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Ringtown, and surrounding communities.

The storm warning, issued at 6:04pm Tuesday expected wind gusts of 60mph and quarter-sized hail for a severe storm over Numidia.

No power outages were reported in northern Schuylkill County, though trees were reported down in Barnesville, and between Brandonville and Shenandoah Heights.

For today, the National Weather Service at State College has a Flash Flood Watch issued for Schuylkill County through “late tonight,” expecting “periods of showers and thunderstorms … this afternoon and evening, most likely between about 1 and 8 pm.

“There will be locations which receive multiple rounds of thunderstorms,” the watch says. “Recent rainfall has made the ground very wet. Therefore, flash flooding is possible.”

A hazardous weather outlook issued by the NWS at State College also says “severe thunderstorms with damaging winds 60 mph or greater and large hail exceeding 1 inch in diameter are probable today, mainly after noon and before midnight. A few tornadoes are also possible.”
