SHENANDOAH – Sarah Umlauf, an Ashland native now residing at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community, will celebrate her 106th birthday next week, but a borough official visited her on Thursday to present a special honor.

“I declare November the 16th, 2017, ‘Sarah Umlauf Day’ in the Borough of Shenandoah,” Mayor Andrew J. Szczyglak said in a presentation in the complex’s dining room.

The mayor was on-hand for the facility’s monthly celebration of resident’s birthdays, where residents who celebrate a birthday that month sit at the dining room’s head table, and receive floral corsages.

Other residents and visiting families are led in the singing of “Happy Birthday,” while cake is served and music performed.

At the celebration, Mayor Szczyglak presented Umlauf with a copy of a proclamation declaring November 16, her birthday, in her honor.

“Whereas, in recognition of this joyous occasion, I, Andrew J. Szczyglak, Mayor of the Borough of Shenandoah, congratulate and honor Sarah Umlauf on her 106th Birthday,” reads an excerpt of the proclamation.

Anyone wishing to send Umlauf a birthday card in recognition of her milestone may do so at this address:
