Three injured in school van crash near Freeland

FOSTER TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County – Two students and an 18-year-old were injured when a school van lost control on an icy roadway and crashed near Freeland, Luzerne County this morning.

According to State Police at Hazleton, the crash occurred around 8:30am Monday on State Route 940 near Veterans Road in Foster Township

A 2010 Ford van was travelling eastbound on Route 940 along a left-hand corner, and lost control on the slippery surface. The van crossed the center line, traveled off the northern side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The van spun 180 degrees, struck another tree, and came to a rest facing south.

Two juveniles, an 8-year-old girl from Hazle Township and an 11-year-old boy from Hazleton, were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton, as was a front-seat passenger, 18-year-old Rebecca Kondash, of Beaver Meadows.

Driver Angel Velez, 32, of Hazleton was uninjured.

The van was towed from the scene by Ayers Towing.

Assisting state police at the scene were Valley Regional Ambulance, Freeland Ambulance, and Foster Township Fire.
