West Mahanoy approves budget, $500 funding increase for fire companies; No 2018 tax increase

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – West Mahanoy Township’s three fire companies will receive an additional $500 each in funding as part of the 2018 final budget, which sees no tax increase for township residents.

Supervisors approved the final budget and funding increase at Tuesday night’s meeting, which sees revenues and expenditures totaling $1,818,500, which is a $30,000 deduction from the tentative budget passed in November.

According to the township’s secretary/treasurer Michael B. Michalik, the deduction comes from the township’s sewer budget.

Also according to Michalik, the township’s fire companies will receive $4,000 each in 2018, instead of an originally planned $3,500 each, following a vote on Tuesday evening.

In other business, township supervisors

  • Approved a proclamation declaring April 2018 as “Pennsylvania 811 Safe Digging Month, as per a request from the PA One Call System.
  • Hired Joseph Laub as a full time road worker at a rate of $13 per hour.
  • Approved 2018 meeting dates, with a reorganization date to occur on Tuesday, January 2 at 7pm
  • Approved the designation of a parcel owned by Glen Ebert in the Altamont section as 544 Altamont Boulevard, Frackville, PA 17931
  • Appointed William Moyer Sr. as township auditor

Present at Tuesday’s meeting were Supervisors Chairman David Lukashunas, Supervisor Joseph Sweeney, Secretary/Treasurer Michalik, and Police Chief Marvin Livergood.

​Absent was Supervisor Paul “Pepper” Martin.
