MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County - Shenandoah's Junior Blue Devil Mini-B squad traveled across the county line to the Silver Bowl for their playoff matchup against the Junior Tornadoes today.
The Shenandoah squad was one of two mini-B teams from northern Schuylkill County to make playoffs, the other being Ashland. In the mini-A bracket, northern Schuylkill was represented by Frackville and Ashland.
Prior to Sunday's game, the announcer asked all in the stadium to bow their heads in prayer for North Schuylkill senior Jaden Leiby, who was critically injured Friday night in the Spartans' championship game against the Pottsville Crimson Tide.
As usual, the Shenandoah and Mt. Carmel Mini-C teams faced off in an unscored scrimmage prior to the Mini-B game.
In the Mini-B game, Mt. Carmel scored early and often, amassing a 32-0 lead by halftime. A run by QB Ethan Bench put Shenandoah on the board with about 1:10 left in the game.
Mt. Carmel would score again, making the final 46-8, advancing to the semi-finals in the Mini-B bracket. Mt. Carmel's Mini-A team played immediately after, facing Tamaqua, with the Tornadoes taking a 26-6 victory.
Ashland's Mini-B team fell 40-0 to Lehighton. On the Mini-A side, Ashland downed Lehighton 28-6, and Frackville blanked St. Clair 48-0. The two local Mini-A squads will face off next Sunday at the Frackville field.
